2010/2011 

Applications

Applications were invited by 28th May 2010 from people in southern England who would like to receive a "John Edgar Award" to participate in this scheme. Applicants should be established in a career in or associated with agriculture or the land-based industries, and if not already in a management position should show the potential to achieve this in the near future. Most, but not all of the successful applicants in the past have been in the age range between their mid twenties to late thirties.

Interviews

Selection interviews were held at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester on 16th June 2010. The selection panel aimed to gather a balanced group of twelve people who can both contribute to and learn from each other and who show commitment to benefiting from the skills learnt. 

Candidates were asked to confirm their ability to attend all the training.

The Course

The aim of the training course is to develop an individual's skills and abilities to enable him or her to become a more effective asset at work, and through that to the rural sector as a whole. 

The 2010/2011 training is residential and involves

  • a five-day tutored course at the RAC, Cirencester from 15th to 19th November 2010

  • a four-day project-based case study module based at the Grosvenor Hotel, Stockbridge from 10th to 13th January 2011

  • a second four-day project-based case study module based at the Grosvenor Hotel, Stockbridge from 15th to 18th March 2011

Topics covered include:

  • Managing people

  • Business Practice, taxation and law

  • Media management

  • Leadership, personal and organisational

Prof. John Alliston, Lead Tutor

The lead tutor is Professor John Alliston, Dean of the School of Agriculture at the Royal Agricultural College. He is assisted by Dr. James Jones who is the College's Principal lecturer and Head of Farm Management. Other academics, professionals and leaders from inside and outside the industry also provide training.

The training is by way of a full scholarship and no charge is made, but participants are asked to support the aims and activities of the Trust in the future.
